How to Draw Inspiration from Others

Think about the last article you read about someone who inspired you. Perhaps it profiled the person in adverse situations and described their conditions and pains. Maybe it was someone who faced adversity but was still able to achieve their health or fitness goals. It probably explained how the person managed to escape  conditions that would hold most people back. The experiences that helped them to succeed can also serve as a model for your success.

The story you read may not be exactly like your situation. However, it may have a similar feel overall or elements that resonate with you. It’s rare that people start out from a successful base. For example, people who have money from a young age aren't always successful, even though we think money is what leads to opportunity and success. Often, they are not hungry for success. Starting from a difficult position isn’t always the case, but it is frequently the way these stories go. If you have to work for something, then you are more likely to see long term success and also to have a better skill set and more options the next time things get tough.

No matter whose story you read, if you don’t continue reading stories, they are likely to fade from your memory. Inspiration is most effective when it is current. So, you need to constantly reinforce the inspiration by reading the profiles of many people.

The stories don’t have to be from famous people. You will find plenty of inspirational stories online. Don’t limit yourself only to the stories of people who are well known. Sometimes, reading or hearing stories about local people can give you a local insight that is impossible to get from a famous person. It could be something that helps you solve a problem that's been causing you to struggle.

You should also look for inspiration from stories you would not typically read. Try reading the story of someone from another culture or an environment that's different to yours. If you are young, try to get a different perspective from an older person and vice versa. When you diversify, your brain won’t know what to expect which can be great for ideas.

Look out for biographies from athletes or people that share the struggles they face. Sometimes they can come from a surprising source. Reading Gary Barlow's autobiography, gave me an insight to another person's struggle with weight loss.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with reading profiles of people who are famous or who are more like you. Reading is part of how to keep the inspiration engine fresh. In fact, it’s a great idea to have these within reach for easy reference, in case you need that boost.

Don’t be afraid to reread a story of someone who inspired you. Sometimes, you can pick up more than you got when you read the story the first time. You will also have a different frame of reference because you know most of the story. Your brain will look for what it didn’t find before.

All the inspiration you gain will be of no use if you don’t take action. It’s great to get inspired. However, it is a waste of time if you let it sit in your brain.

The Importance of Sleep

While many consider fitness and nutrition to be the two-headed dragon when it comes to peak health and performance, we tend to forget about the third - sleep. A quality sleeping regimen is of the utmost important, if not more important than consistent exercise and proper nutrition. Without a good night’s rest, you immediately increase the risks of experiencing negative side-effects like poor-performance, slower cognition, mood swings, hormone fluctuation, weight gain, depression, and more! An improved sleeping regimen can provide immediate benefits! In today's digital age, workaholics and the “grind-life” are often put on a pedestal. However, this attitude can lead to poor sleep cycles, lack of rest and recovery, and, ultimately - burnout.  Instead, we need to flip the switch on what is truly important so that we can tackle life with a new vengeance.  Benefits of Quality Sleep Some of the benefits of a proper sleeping regimen are: Reduced stress; Improved mood; Improved perfor...

The Importance of Core Strength

Many of us are well accustomed to the development of the glory muscles. Muscles like the chest, shoulders, quads and glutes will always get special attention in the gym - but how many people train their core correctly? Yes, you see others doing simple exercises like leg raises and crunches to work their “abs,” but when we say core, we mean something different.  Think of the core as an entire muscular system that spans the entire surface of the stomach and back. The core is a system of muscles that starts at the hips and runs all the way up to the ribcage - supporting the body the entire way without fault.  With that said, many people have a very weak core which can lead to back pain, hip pain, and even pain in the upper back and neck.  Training your core is important for these main reasons: Your core is your stability. Whenever you’re doing an exercise where a load is placed on your back, shoulders, or overhead, your core is the main muscular system that is providing sta...

The New Normal - Your Nutrition

We are all now living our “new normal”. We’re in a whole new world where many of us are having to adjust what we do and how we do it because of the COVID-19 virus . Schools, shops and gyms are closed; a lot of us are working from home or stuck at home in isolation. So we're going to have to do things a little bit differently. I'd like to offer you a little bit of structure and routine. I find that having a structure or a schedule can really help me maintain my focus and sense of purpose. I have taken each of the four wellness elements that lie at the heart of UNION FItness (Fitness, Food, Focus, and Fun) and given them their own special Facebook Live. On a Monday, we'll have a look at FITNESS. Tuesday, we'll have a look at FOOD. And then Thursday, we'll have a look at sort of FOCUS, and then Friday, just before the weekend, we're thinking about FUN. Each FB Live will start around about 10:30am and I’ll try to keep them short. If you have any questions...
