We are all now living our “new normal”. We’re in a whole new world where many of us are having to adjust what we do and how we do it because of the COVID-19 virus . Schools, shops and gyms are closed; a lot of us are working from home or stuck at home in isolation. So we're going to have to do things a little bit differently.
I'd like to offer you a little bit of structure and routine. I find that having a structure or a schedule can really help me maintain my focus and sense of purpose.
I have taken each of the four wellness elements that lie at the heart of UNION FItness (Fitness, Food, Focus, and Fun) and given them their own special Facebook Live.
On a Monday, we'll have a look at FITNESS. Tuesday, we'll have a look at FOOD. And then Thursday, we'll have a look at sort of FOCUS, and then Friday, just before the weekend, we're thinking about FUN.
Each FB Live will start around about 10:30am and I’ll try to keep them short. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do pass them on. You can look over the first week of these now and I look forward to you joining me next week for some more!!
Your routine is going to be different during this crisis and so it is important to put plans and structures in place. No doubt we did a lot of adjustments last week. We had to adapt, we had to make some changes. No donut that will have caused some frustration. But if we learn to accept it, that frustration goes away. Let's learn to deal and focus on what we're given and to do the best we can.
So it’s a case of doing some things differently. Develop an open mind and give some new things a go.
For example, as far as food and nutrition goes, dig out those recipe books and learn some new recipes. Go and find out how to use ingredients in a different way - items that you may not have used before. If you are a meat eater, try and look at a more plant based diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (these seem to be more plentiful in the shops as people aren't stockpiling fresh foods)
When we're sort of stuck at home, it's very easy to keep grazing to keep eating mainly out of boredom than anything else. If we do feel a little bit more peckish, the first thing to grab is some water because most of the time when we think we're hungry, we're actually thirsty. So grab some water that might sort of get those hunger pains in order to subsidise them a little bit.
When our routines and structures are different or break down, our meal times become more flexible. Therefore, try and reschedule those meal times now at a time that suits you. For example, breakfast does not have to be the meal that you eat immediately when you get out of bed. While breakfast is the meal that you have the first meal you have of the day (the meal that breaks your overnight fast) and sets you up for the day, it doesn’t have to be eaten immediately upon waking. It doesn’t matter too much when you have your breakfast meal - shortly after getting up or a couple of hours later. What does matter is that you make sure it's a good, nutritious and fulfilling meal.
Once you've got a good breakfast in place, then think about lunch - what would be a good way of having a good scheduled lunch? Again, trying to make that as nutritious as possible.
Finally, it may be that you have fewer meals during the day. Remember we are not as active if we're at home as we are elsewhere. So we do not need as many calories. It can be very easy to over consume when we are at home not just because of the temptation to snacking, but also because we don't need as many calories. So maybe look at reducing your portion size and the frequency of your meals. You may only need two meals a day - and that's absolutely fine.
While many consider fitness and nutrition to be the two-headed dragon when it comes to peak health and performance, we tend to forget about the third - sleep. A quality sleeping regimen is of the utmost important, if not more important than consistent exercise and proper nutrition. Without a good night’s rest, you immediately increase the risks of experiencing negative side-effects like poor-performance, slower cognition, mood swings, hormone fluctuation, weight gain, depression, and more! An improved sleeping regimen can provide immediate benefits! In today's digital age, workaholics and the “grind-life” are often put on a pedestal. However, this attitude can lead to poor sleep cycles, lack of rest and recovery, and, ultimately - burnout. Instead, we need to flip the switch on what is truly important so that we can tackle life with a new vengeance. Benefits of Quality Sleep Some of the benefits of a proper sleeping regimen are: Reduced stress; Improved mood; Improved perfor...
