Cottage Cheese has been a stable of many dieters' shopping basket for years, since it can be low calorie and is full of protein. But recent research has given us another reason to love this healthy food.
Research, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, has found that eating cottage cheese before going to sleep can help with weight loss, as the low calorie food has been shown to boosts metabolism, build muscle and improve overall health – all while you are in bed, according to the scientists.
Professor Michael Ormsbee and his team found that consuming two tablespoons of cottage cheese just half an hour before going to bed was actually good for wellbeing, and it offers as an alternative to healthy drinks or powders and there was no gain in body fat levels.
It is one of the first studies where they looked at the effects of eating a whole food as opposed to a protein shake or supplement. Professor Ormsbee, who works at Florida State University, said: "Until now, we presumed whole foods would act similarly to the data on supplemental protein, but we had no real evidence. This is important because it adds to the body of literature that indicates whole foods work just as well as protein supplementation, and it gives people options for pre-sleep nutrition that go beyond powders and shaker bottles."
Cottage cheese is believed to be a good snack before bed since it has high levels of a protein called casein, which is released slowly into the body. This ensures a steady supply of amino acids through the night. These are then used to help your body with various processes such as building muscle and regulating immune function.
The study concluded that cottage cheese produced a metabolic response that was no different to that from the metabolic response of liquid protein found in supplement shakes.
So there you go - cottage cheese can help not only with weight loss, but also muscle building. Make sure you buy a low fat version so as not to over do the calories. Also look at the supermarket's own "basic" range cottage cheese. One supermarket's version has less fat and salt that the version marketed as "Low Fat" and is significantly cheaper!
