Making it Count in 2019

Looking to make 2019 THE year of change? Make this year's resolutions stick!

At this time of year, our social media feeds are constantly filled with posts of everyone vowing to change for the better - setting out their goals and New Year's resolutions in all their glory. But in a few week's time, how many of them will still be going strong?

What separates those that keep their resolutions and those that don't, isn't down to the person, or the goal itself - it's connected to whether they took action or not.

Action is what moves things forward. We can promise things to ourselves as much as we want - indeed, we find it reassuring to do so. "I will lose weight this year", "I will visit the gym every week", "I will get a new job" and so on. All these are great aspirations and are all very achievable. However, it is the failure to connect these aspirations to action that lies at the heart of if they will be achieved or not.

Of course, that all sounds very obvious and simple. But how often is does it lie at the heart of why people don't fulfil their dreams? And the reason for many people not taking action is that first step is often the hardest. Overcoming inertia takes more effort and more energy than keeping things going.

Also, at the start of anything, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. There is so much that needs to be achieved and it can seem that the final destination is a long way off. So in order to get started and to make things manageable I recommend the following:

Once you have defined your goal (more about crafting goals can be found in my Goal Setting Worksheet - see attached file) you need to decide what is the very next step you need to take in order to begin to make progress. It might be visiting a gym for a look round. It might be digging out your sports kit. It might be throwing out unhealthy foods and removing temptation. Whatever it is, take the next immediate step that moves you towards your goal.

That first step will be a small, manageable one, but it will be the most important once since it will set things in motion. It will begin that journey - insert overused phrase about all long journeys starting with a single step!

Once you have motivated yourself into action, establishing momentum to keep you going is the next stage. To do this you need to develop habits and routines that will mean that you keep taking action that supports your goal. For fitness, this might be dedicating time each week to exercise; for healthier eating, it might be swapping out sugary breakfast food for an oats or eggs based breakfast.

So make 2019 the year that your resolutions become real and you turn those aspirations into actionable steps. Remember, if you need any help or support, UNION Fitness is here to help. Get in touch or take a look at our packages. Good luck!

The Importance of Sleep

While many consider fitness and nutrition to be the two-headed dragon when it comes to peak health and performance, we tend to forget about the third - sleep. A quality sleeping regimen is of the utmost important, if not more important than consistent exercise and proper nutrition. Without a good night’s rest, you immediately increase the risks of experiencing negative side-effects like poor-performance, slower cognition, mood swings, hormone fluctuation, weight gain, depression, and more! An improved sleeping regimen can provide immediate benefits! In today's digital age, workaholics and the “grind-life” are often put on a pedestal. However, this attitude can lead to poor sleep cycles, lack of rest and recovery, and, ultimately - burnout.  Instead, we need to flip the switch on what is truly important so that we can tackle life with a new vengeance.  Benefits of Quality Sleep Some of the benefits of a proper sleeping regimen are: Reduced stress; Improved mood; Improved perfor...

The Importance of Core Strength

Many of us are well accustomed to the development of the glory muscles. Muscles like the chest, shoulders, quads and glutes will always get special attention in the gym - but how many people train their core correctly? Yes, you see others doing simple exercises like leg raises and crunches to work their “abs,” but when we say core, we mean something different.  Think of the core as an entire muscular system that spans the entire surface of the stomach and back. The core is a system of muscles that starts at the hips and runs all the way up to the ribcage - supporting the body the entire way without fault.  With that said, many people have a very weak core which can lead to back pain, hip pain, and even pain in the upper back and neck.  Training your core is important for these main reasons: Your core is your stability. Whenever you’re doing an exercise where a load is placed on your back, shoulders, or overhead, your core is the main muscular system that is providing sta...

The New Normal - Your Nutrition

We are all now living our “new normal”. We’re in a whole new world where many of us are having to adjust what we do and how we do it because of the COVID-19 virus . Schools, shops and gyms are closed; a lot of us are working from home or stuck at home in isolation. So we're going to have to do things a little bit differently. I'd like to offer you a little bit of structure and routine. I find that having a structure or a schedule can really help me maintain my focus and sense of purpose. I have taken each of the four wellness elements that lie at the heart of UNION FItness (Fitness, Food, Focus, and Fun) and given them their own special Facebook Live. On a Monday, we'll have a look at FITNESS. Tuesday, we'll have a look at FOOD. And then Thursday, we'll have a look at sort of FOCUS, and then Friday, just before the weekend, we're thinking about FUN. Each FB Live will start around about 10:30am and I’ll try to keep them short. If you have any questions...
